A Few FAQs....

Local planning authorities may serve a Building Preservation Notice  (BPN) on the owner and occupier of a building which is not listed, but  which they consider is of special architectural or historic interest and  is in danger of demolition or of alteration in such a way as to affect  its character as a building of such interest. If a BPN is served, an  application to list the building must be made at the same time to  Historic England.

As of 2012 there were approximately 375,588 listed buildings in England.  Listed buildings are classified into 3 grades. Grade I buildings (2.5%  of total) are of exceptional interest. Grade II* buildings (5.5% of  total) are particularly important buildings of more than special  interest. Grade II buildings (92% of total) are of special interest  warranting every effort to preserve them.

The Party Wall etc Act 1996 came into force on 1st July 1997. The Act  places legal responsibilities on those undertaking building works within  specified distances of neighbouring structures and party walls, amongst  other things. Party Wall legislation is somewhat complicated and  technical in nature. Having undertaken Party Wall work since its  inception in 1997, we have an extensive knowledge of the Act and its  implications.
